6 Auto Theft Myths Busted

Auto theft is now the nation's top property crime. In fact, a vehicle is stolen every 25.5 seconds.** With that in mind, here are the six most well-known auto theft myths that do more harm than good.

Myth #1: "Auto thieves only steal newer vehicles"

Each year, the top-10 list of most-stolen vehicles is dominated by older models. Older vehicles are often stolen for their parts, which are frequently out of production, costly, and difficult to find. Also, newer vehicles often have more sophisticated anti-theft devices, making them better-protected against theft.

Myth #2: "Auto insurance always covers auto theft"

To be covered for auto theft, your policy must include comprehensive coverage, which covers non-collision damage. This coverage is optional in most states, and 23 percent of policies don't include it.

Myth #3: "Stolen vehicles usually get recovered"

Roughly half of all stolen vehicles are never recovered; when vehicles go missing for an extended period of time, the chances of recovery are even lower. Even if a vehicle is found, it may be severely damaged or completely totaled. Don't rely on law enforcement to recover your vehicle—take steps to prevent auto theft.

Myth #4: "Auto insurance will always provide a rental car"

Don't automatically assume that your insurance company will provide you with a rental car if your vehicle is stolen. Some policies require a separate fee to provide replacement rental car coverage. If you don't have this coverage, you'll be forced to pay for your own rental car if your car is stolen.

Myth #5: "Anti-theft devices are easy to install"

If you're thinking of installing an anti-theft system yourself, think again. Modern anti-theft devices must be manually wired into the vehicle's electrical system, and require a certified professional to install properly. Cutting and slicing into your vehicle's most sensitive components could potentially damage your vehicle, so be sensible and let a professional do the work for you.

Myth #6: "Cars in desolate areas are more likely to be stolen"

Parking in a desolate area, such as a parking garage or distant parking lot, does not make your vehicle more likely to be stolen. In fact, the majority of auto theft occurs in residential areas. Only 2 of every 10 stolen vehicles are taken from parking lots and parking garages.
